Youku-Chinese Youtube

Youku is the most popular video-sharing website in China. Although its name is similar to Youtube, Youku is not as dominant as Youtube over the Chinese market. Tudou, another popular Chinese video-sharing website, is a very strong enemy against Youku.
Youku is founded in 2006, only one year after Youtube. Personally, I believe Youku got the idea from Youtube. At that time, there are a few other Chinese video-sharing websites. Youku didn’t have much advantages over other competitors at its early age, but it was lucky to receive a great amount of investment from venture capitalists. The large early funds help Youku to develop rapidly.
The most significant difference between Youku and Youtube is the video content they provide. In general, most contents on Youtube are short videos uploaded by amateurs. However, you can find lots of full-length TV programs and movies on Youku. Chinese Internet policy is not as strict as U.S.. There are less restrictions about copyright in China. This is a big “advantage” of Chinese companies. But Chinese market is getting more and more complete. Now Youku has to sign contracts with these media companies for copyrights. The “free days” are gone.
